12 Angolans and 4 participants from São Tomé Emerge as the 2022 Mandela Washington Fellowship Winners

The United States Embassy in Angola is pleased to announce that twelve (12) Angolans and three (3) So Tomé and Principeans have been chosen to participate in the 2022 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship, launched in 2014, is the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) and reflects the United States’ commitment to investing in Africa’s future. YALI was founded in 2010 to assist young Africans in promoting economic growth and prosperity, strengthening democratic governance, and enhancing peace and security throughout Africa.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship has involved over 5,100 young leaders from every countries in Sub-Saharan Africa since 2014.

Leadership Institutes will be held at 27 educational institutions in 20 states and the District of Columbia for roughly 700 Mandela Washington Fellows.

The six-week Institutes, which will be held on college and university campuses around the United States, will help Fellows strengthen their leadership skills via academic study, workshops, mentoring, networking with US leaders, and engagement with members of the local community.

Alumni Enrichment Institutes (AEI) are a new option for 2021 Fellowship Alumni to work with US peers and each other while continuing to improve the professional and leadership abilities they gained during their virtual 2021 Leadership Institutes.

In a competitive process, up to 200 qualified 2021 Fellowship Alumni were chosen to travel to the United States in July and August 2022 for three-week internships at U.S. institutions of higher education.

The Alumni Enrichment Institute will offer immersive and discussion-based learning on themes such as the diverse culture and society of the United States, resiliency and ethics in leadership, and social justice ideas that are generally applicable to many disciplines and sectors. The AEI program involves placements at schools, institutions, and non-governmental organizations in the United States.

Since 2010, 87 Angolans and since 2014, 20 Sao Tomeans have participated in the Young African Leadership Initiatives flagship program. These young leaders return home to make their communities and teams stronger and better engaged to have an impact.

After their Leadership Institutes, Fellows will participate in a virtual Summit. Additionally, up to 100 competitively selected Fellows will virtually engage in professional development with U.S. organizations in the public, private, or non-profit sector. Fellows can participate in Alumni Programming after their Fellowships to further build their professional skills and networks.
