63-year-old retired man from Gorton escapes death

Danny Albanese, a 63-year-old retired man from Gorton, Greater Manchester, had a close brush with death while doing a mobility workout at his local PureGym. He collapsed and his heart stopped three times, but he was saved thanks to the quick thinking of a member of staff, who used the gym’s defibrillator to resuscitate him.

The collapse was caused by an underlying condition, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which thickens the heart muscle and can lead to heart attacks and strokes.

After spending a night in the hospital, Danny was fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), which monitors his heart by sending regular downloads to a heart specialist. Although Danny’s recovery plan was delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic, he has been able to reintroduce weight training and return to the gym five times a week thanks to supervised exercise and appointments with a mental health nurse.

Danny is grateful to the staff at PureGym and the paramedics who saved his life. Rebecca Passmore, UK managing director at PureGym, said that Danny’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of having access to defibrillators, and announced that PureGym has installed them across its gyms to improve member safety. PureGym is the first official gym partner of the British Heart Foundation and is working to improve heart health in the UK.
