8 passengers hospitalized after an American Airlines flight experienced severe turbulence.

According to a representative for Birmingham International Airport, eight passengers were sent to the hospital on Wednesday after an American Airlines flight from Tampa, Florida, to Nashville, Tennessee, experienced extreme turbulence and was forced to divert to Alabama.

Despite the “unexpected turbulence,” according to American Airlines, the aircraft successfully touched down in Birmingham at at 3:17 p.m. local time.

According to the airline, six passengers and two flight attendants were admitted to the hospital for additional testing.

Regarding the state of the passengers’ injuries or what caused them, neither the airline nor the airport offered any additional details.

The airline reported that 52 passengers, two pilots, and two flight attendants were on board the Embraer E175.
