Kenya’s Members of County Assemblies joining politics do not need to resign by Feb 9 – IEBC

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 9 – The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has clarified that Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) who wish to contest as Members of Parliament in the August elections do not need to resign.
In a statement, the Commission’s Chairman Wafula Chebukati noted that the Court of Appeal had stayed the execution of the implementation of Article 99 2(d) of the Constitution which stipulates that the ward representatives seeking to be MPs should resign six months before the General Election.
Chebukati however, reminded the MCAs with ambitions that they can only resign before submitting their nomination papers to the Returning Officers to contest as MPs.
A majority of MCAs across the country have expressed interest to join the parliamentary race in their various regions with this clarification coming in handy paving way for them to hit the ground running.
