Just minutes after escaping jail for a drunken, profane outburst against police, an unrepentant mother of two celebrated with drinks in the pub.
After her attorney convinced a judge to release her by claiming she was “sorry” for her behavior and that she had given up drinking, Amy Newall, 30, of Liverpool, was captured on camera punching the air with joy before downing pints of lager.
The inmate was apprehended in March after launching into a homophobic and expletive-filled tirade against a police officer while being carried to a station, and then assaulting the other policemen when taken to the cells.
Ms. Newall headbutted a police van’s clear Perspex during her rampage and yelled at a PC, “I’m going to bash your head off, you f***ing grass, you f***ing grassing b*****d. “You are f***ing dead you little f****t.” Ms. Newall also spat on the ground.
She was found to have a history of offences and had previously served time in prison for attacking a police officer, according to investigations.
Ms. Newall of Bootle, Liverpool, admitted guilt to two counts of using threatening, abusive, or insulting words or behavior to annoy, alarm, or distress and was given a maximum sentence of six months in jail at Sefton Magistrates Court.
She claimed to have a “multiplicity of problems” and was receiving therapy for her severe drinking, but was nonetheless given an 18-month community order with a six-month alcohol recovery program.
She should receive a longer sentence, according to the prosecution, given her background, her inebriation at the time, and the homophobic nature of the assault.
After her celebration akin to scoring a goal, Ms. Newall was observed drinking with companions outside the Merton Inn pub, which is located across the street from the court.
At 5:50 p.m. on March 11, when the incident took place, officers warned and arrested the defendant for unrelated reasons.
The prosecutor, Miss Amie Gouldson, stated: “A caged vehicle was required due to her aggressive behavior. Once inside, she started threatening everyone.
‘She head butted the clear plastic Perspex and said, ‘I am going to smash your head off, you f***ing grass, you f***ing grassing b*****d.’
‘She continued to make threats banging her head on the Perspex and spat on the floor saying: ”You f***ing m**g and little snitch’.
‘She kicked the air vent and said ‘You are f***ing dead you little f****t.’ She called him ‘a f****t’ two more times.’
Miss Gouldson said the abuse carried on after the defendant noticed that the constable was wearing a silver wedding ring.
‘You are definitely gay and a f****t’, she said.’
The prosecutor said that Ms Newall was arrested and cautioned for the homophobic abuse. After arriving at St Anne Police Station, she continued to be abusive.
‘She was abusive to all of the officers,’ Miss Gouldson said, ‘She called Constable Maddox a f****t. She was again cautioned and arrested.’
Ms Newall, whose father is a convicted drug dealer, has 19 offences on her record including a public order offence from May of last year, and a racially or religiously aggravated matter.
She had served time in prison for burglary, and her most recent court appearance was in March for drunkenness, disorderliness, and criminal damage.
She lived in a Bootle apartment that was dubbed “Gang HQ” in 2016 after it was connected to shootings, stabbings, and drug selling. After a firearm belonging to her father was found on the house, police later successfully applied for a three-month closure order.
Rory McCormack, Ms. Newall’s attorney, offered this explanation in her defense: “What may be noteworthy is that when the defendant had calmed down in the cells, she said sorry to the cops.” She did apologize for her behavior when the effects of the drinking faded.
Ms. Newall had been abusing alcohol on a regular basis for a long time, according to Mr. McCormack, to the point that she had to be hospitalized for seizures.
She is currently being taken Librium for her alcoholism, and there has been talk of finding her a spot at a detox facility, he continued. Given her numerous issues, she claims to be participating with probation as best she can.
She is collaborating with addiction support services, and it is anticipated that she will do so in the future. Her current arrest would not be a step forward, but rather a step back.
“You might believe that the case has crossed the custody threshold given her history and the uplift, but if the court were to reach that particular conclusion, my recommendation is that it should only impose an immediate custodial sentence if there was no other way to address the variety of issues she faces.
Actually, this is her final opportunity.
Ms. Newall received a £100 fine, was mandated to pay victim surcharges, fees, and compensation totaling £200.
District Judge James Clarke ruled that these offenses were made worse by the defendant’s intoxication, her prior conviction for a crime that was racially or religiously motivated, and the fact that she had previously violated the terms of a suspended jail sentence for attacking a police officer.
I do take note of your apology to the police, your expression of regret, and the actions you have made to address your alcoholism.
‘Even if you claim to have stopped drinking since May, the alcohol rehabilitation requirement will supplement your efforts at support group meetings and with the medication that has been provided.
There is a chance here. You are the only one to blame if you throw this away.
