Five armed suspects, including three South Africans, were detained by the Botswana Police Service for attempting to rob cash-in-transit at a mall in Gaborone on Friday, July 15.
According to BPS Senior Superintendent Near Bagali, the incident happened close to the River-walk shopping centre in the nation’s capital.
Two Batswana men, aged 39 and 42, and three South African men, ranging in age from 26 to 34, make up the group of five suspects. They allegedly attempted to rob a cash-in-transit vehicle owned by Security Systems Company, but were unsuccessful.
“Upon arrest, an AK47 rifle and three pistols with live ammunition, including an electronic communication jammer were found in possession of the suspects,” said Bagali.
According to police, a car that was allegedly used in the cash-in-transit robbery has been confiscated. It is believed that the car was stolen.
Some of the guns discovered in the suspects’ possession may be from a collection of Botswana police weapons that were taken on June 28, 2022, during a robbery at the Goodhope Police Station.
The suspects are connected to other robbery cases that are currently in court, according to the police superintendent, while additional robberies are still being investigated.
The investigation is ongoing.
