Three people killed in a shooting at a state park in eastern Iowa

On Friday morning, a shooting at a state park in eastern Iowa left three people dead, and the alleged shooter was also murdered, according to authorities.

Before 6:30 a.m., according to a statement from Mike Krapfl, special agent in charge of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, police responded to reports of a gunshot at the Maquoketa Caves State Park Campground.

Krapfl said three persons were found dead at the location by authorities responding to allegations of gunshots, but he did not say how they died or reveal their identities.

He said that after investigating the campsite, police discovered the body of a Nebraskan guy who had shot himself in the head. Anthony Sherwin, age 23, was named by the authorities.

In the wake of the incident, the campsite was shut down. Camp Shalom, a local children’s summer camp, said on Facebook that it had informed parents and set up a pick-up location for youngsters.

Officials from Camp Shalom said that all campers had been located.

Krapfl stated that although the park is still closed, there is no longer a danger to the general public.
