Truck crashes into a neighbourhood Barbeque outside Rotterdam, killing three people


In the Netherlands, three people were killed when a truck crashed into a neighbourhood barbeque near Rotterdam.

Rotterdam police said on their Twitter account that a container truck collided with a gathering of people attending a neighbourhood barbecue. Several people have died, and others have been sent to the hospital.

At around 7 p.m., the truck off the road in the village of Nieuw-Beijerland, just south of Rotterdam, and careened down the edge of a dike, according to the police.

Those wounded were enjoying a BBQ at the local ice club IJsclub de Kom, some 30 kilometres south of Rotterdam, when a truck drove off the road and crashed into the gathering on the narrow Zuidzijssedijk.

The Dutch media stated that others had been brought to hospitals for treatment of their injuries.

The accident in the Netherlands occurred one day after a van driver injured six people by ploughing onto a busy café terrace in downtown Brussels.

Local media websites revealed images of a large vehicle from a Spanish transport business at the base of a minor dike.

The motorist, who is reportedly in shock, is being questioned by police. It is now unknown why he drove to the gathering.

At the celebration, overturned picnic tables and other debris were seen on camera.

According to De Telegraaf, the group was enjoying an annual celebration when the vehicle rushed towards them.

A huge number of ambulances and trauma helicopters have been sent to the scene. Additionally, authorities are arranging for a crane to remove the vehicle.

According to a local radio, the deputy mayor of the municipality of Hoeksche Waard is present on scene. This municipality encompasses Nieuw-Beijerland.

An investigation into the incident is currently underway. According to reports, police are proceeding on the assumption that the collision was an accident.
