Queen Elizabeth II, who ascended the throne 70 years ago and died Thursday at age 96, was photographed innumerable times with her husband of 73 years, Prince Philip. But for Getty Images photographer Chris Jackson, who has captured the royal family for more than a decade, there is one picture that stands out.
In September of 2006, Jackson recorded the pair laughing with Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall as they watched a game of tug-of-war at the annual Braemar Highland Gathering in Scotland.
In April 2021, upon Philip’s death at the age of 99, Jackson posted his favourite picture of the royal couple in an emotional tribute.
“Hands-down still my favourite picture of HM The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh and The Prince of Wales at an event they clearly enjoy and were so relaxed at, The Braemar Highland Gathering,” he wrote on Instagram. “This spectacular and friendly event takes place just down the road from The Queen’s summer residence of Balmoral.”
