After rushing to Scotland to be at the Queen’s bedside when her passing was revealed to the country last evening, Charles and his wife spent the night in Balmoral.
Before meeting with Prime Minister Liz Truss and delivering a televised address at 6 o’clock today, he will return to the capital.
Condolences have been sent from all around the world in response to the Queen’s passing. She was the longest-reigning monarch in British history and had dominated the international stage for seven decades.
People from the public started congregating once again outside Buckingham Palace to drop flowers and take pictures of the growing tribute there as they awoke to their first day without a lady once referred to by her grandson Harry as “the nation’s grandmother.”
As he was officially sworn in as the next king of Britain, Charles yesterday paid homage to the Queen, whom he called a “cherished Sovereign and much-loved Mother.”
Only 30 minutes had passed after the announcement of the Queen’s “peaceful” departure when the statement “from His Majesty The King” was made.
Clarence House announced that he would henceforth be referred to as King Charles III. He had the option to select one of these names instead since his complete name is Charles Philip Arthur George.
“The passing of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a time of the greatest anguish for me and all members of my family,” he said in his statement.
“We grieve the loss of a beloved Mother and Sovereign with much sorrow.
“I am certain that her loss will be felt keenly by the nation, the Realms, the Commonwealth, as well as by countless others all over the globe.
“My family and I will be comforted and strengthened by our awareness of the respect and profound love in which The Queen was so universally regarded throughout this season of loss and transition,” the statement goes.
Charles and his wife Camilla boarded the royal chopper at Dumfries House in Ayrshire, and spent the most of the day at their mother’s side.
Princess Anne, his younger sister, had already arrived at Balmoral after travelling to Scotland on royal business as well.
Other prominent members of the Royal Family, such as Prince William and Her Majesty’s other two children, Andrew and Edward, joined them.
Following the Queen’s physicians’ unusual admission that they were “concerned” about her health and were keeping her under close observation, the family hurried to her home in Scotland.
At 73 years old, Charles is taking the throne, making him roughly 10 years older than the Queen was when she was in the same situation.
After the passing of his mother, he is expected to begin a fundamental reform of the monarchy since he has regularly discussed a front line that is smaller.
According to royal observers, the former Prince of Wales wants to make sure that the Firm has “no hangers-on,” with each member required to contribute their fair share to a new, more efficient monarchy.

Prince William will succeed Charles as King and take on the new title of Prince of Wales, while Kate Middleton will become the new Princess of Wales.
Charles will take centre stage in the revamped monarchy as the next King. His dwelling will alter the most immediately, along with his rumoured intention to reduce the size of the family.
Since 2003, Clarence House, located on The Mall in the City of Westminster, has served as the former Prince of Wales’ official home.
The Queen has lived in Buckingham Palace as her official home, but after the passing of her beloved Prince Philip, she often visited Windsor Castle.
The Queen intended to stay at Clarence House when her father passed away, but Winston Churchill persuaded her to transfer there because of Buckingham Palace’s status as the monarchy, according to royal writer Penny Junor in her book “The Firm.”
It is anticipated that King Charles would relocate inside Buckingham Palace as his mother did.
