Michelle Emma May Elizabeth Donelan was born in Whitley, Cheshire, England on April 8, 1984 (she is 38 years old). She grew raised in Whitley, Cheshire, and spoke at the Conservative Party Conference in Blackpool at the age of 15 in 1999, having decided at the age of six to become a politician. She graduated from The County High School, Leftwich, and the University of York with a bachelor’s degree in history and politics. During her time as an undergraduate, she participated in York Student Television.
Career
Prior to her 2015 election, Michelle Donelan’s career outside of politics was in marketing, including stints at Marie Claire magazine and World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). She ran in the 2010 general election for the safe Labour seat of Wentworth and Dearne in South Yorkshire, receiving 7,396 votes (17.6%) to Labour MP John Healey’s 21,316 (50%) votes. In February 2013, she was subsequently selected as the potential parliamentary candidate for Chippenham. In Wiltshire, the constituency is comprised of the market towns of Bradford on Avon, Chippenham, Corsham, and Melksham, as well as the rural areas surrounding them.

She defeated incumbent Liberal Democrat Duncan Hames by a margin of 26,354 votes (47.6%) to 16,284 votes (29.0%). In July 2015, Donelan was chosen to the Education Select Committee by her fellow MPs; in November 2015, she joined the Sub-Committee on Education, Skills, and the Economy. Before the 2016 referendum, Donelan was against the United parliament leaving the European Union, but he has consistently opposed UK membership in the EU since then.
Donelan was re-elected as the representative for Chippenham in June 2017 with 31,267 votes (54.7%), a majority of 16,630 over the 14,637 votes cast for the Liberal Democrats (25.6%). Donelan was designated a whip assistant in 2018 and a whip for the government in July 2019. She was appointed parliamentary undersecretary for children in September 2019 to fill in for Kemi Badenoch on her maternity leave. Donelan was re-elected with 30,994 votes (54.3%), a majority of 11,288 over the 19,706 Liberal Democrat votes (34.5%), in the December 2019 general election.
Michelle Donelan became Minister of State for Universities after the February 2020 cabinet reshuffle. Her responsibilities included universities and co-chairing the Family Justice Board, which oversees the operation of the family justice system and is advised by the Family Justice Council, as of May 2020. In the 2021 cabinet reshuffle, her role was renamed Minister of State for Higher and Further Education, and she was granted cabinet attendance privileges. In addition, she was sworn into the Privy Council.
Donelan resigned as Secretary of State on 7 July 2022, after less than 36 hours in the office, along with more than 50 other cabinet resignations, stating that Johnson had “placed us in an impossible role.” She was the cabinet member with the shortest tenure in British history, as her two-day term was shorter than Earl Temple’s four-day term as Foreign Secretary. Following speculations that she will receive severance compensation at the level of Secretary of State despite her brief service, Donelan committed to donate the entirety of any such payout to a local charity.
The new prime minister, Liz Truss, designated Michelle Donelan Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport (“culture secretary”) on September 6, 2022. Donelan was moved to Secretary of State for Education on July 5, 2022, following a large number of resignations from the second Johnson administration over Boris Johnson’s handling of the Chris Pincher incident.
