Atletico sign Barcelona’s Antoine Griezmann

Atletico Madrid has stated that they have reached an agreement to sign Antoine Griezmann from Barcelona on a permanent basis until 2026.

Griezmann has been on loan at Atletico Madrid since August 2021, following a rocky time at Camp Nou and a €120 million transfer in 2019.

“Griezmann has signed a contract keeping him with our club until June 30, 2026,” Atletico Madrid stated in a statement on Monday.

The 2018 World Cup champion was an integral part of Diego Simeone’s plans last season, but he has mostly been limited to substitute appearances this season as Atletico attempted to avoid paying a rumored €40 million purchase fee if he played over a set amount of games.

Griezmann desired more playing time as the World Cup approached, so Atletico and Barcelona negotiated a new deal, with Barcelona president Joan Laporta announcing the amount before the club’s members assembly on Sunday.

“It is for €20 million plus €4 million in variables,” Laporte explained.

If Atletico decides to sell the player in the future, they must pay us the difference between the agreed-upon price of €40 million and the actual sale price.

Atletico did not disclose the contract’s monetary worth.

In his two stays in the capital, Griezmann has played 303 times for the club and scored 144 goals.

In 102 appearances for Barcelona, he scored 35 goals and won the Copa del Rey in 2021.

His greatest success in club football has come with Atletico Madrid, where he won the Europa League and Uefa Super Cup in 2018.
