Khary Crump agreed to plead guilty to misdemeanor counts of assault/battery and disorderly conduct person-jostling in exchange for his role in the October tunnel incident at Michigan Stadium, according to his attorney Mike Nochols of the Detroit Free Press.
Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit first charged defensive back Crump with felony assault with a lethal weapon after video footage captured him swinging his helmet at Michigan cornerback Gemon Green. Green was apparently consulted for the plea agreement, which includes Crump penning an apologetic letter. Once Crump completes his probation, the charges will be dismissed and his record will be expunged.
According to the Free Press, Crump said in a statement, “This is a step.” “Writing Gemon an apology was a step. I am proceeding step by step. I am working on KJ as a person, as a student, and as an athlete. I can only say “keep tuned”
Each of Crump’s accusations carries a $500 fine and a maximum of 93 days in prison. His attorney apparently does not anticipate him receiving jail time. Nichols also indicated to the Free Press that Crump, who is suspended for the first eight games of the upcoming season, had no intention of entering the transfer portal.
Green and Ja’Den McBurrows were pummeled by Michigan State players as they walked to the locker room following Michigan’s 29-7 victory over the Spartans. Six other Michigan State players are facing charges as a result of this incident.
Jacoby Windmon is charged with one count of misdemeanor assault and battery, while the other five (Zion Young, Itayvion Brown, Brandon Wright, Angelo Grose, and Justin White) are each charged with one count of misdemeanor aggravated assault. Michigan State suspended all seven players, plus one more who was not accused, for the final four games of the 2022 season. Crump alone received additional sanctions from the Big Ten.
“Crump’s letter of apologies to Gemon was sincere…. Slowly but surely, he is pulling himself out of a dreadful abyss,” Nichols remarked, as reported by the Free Press. I think that, in the end, this child will have a remarkable recovery.
