On January 1, 2023, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) welcomed a total of 86 infants.
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube and provincial Health Minister Nomagugu Simelane greeted youngsters born on the first day of the new year with gifts.
“There are currently 86 youngsters in total, 50 girls and 36 boys.”
According to the KZN Department of Health, the first newborn boy in 2023 was born at Addington Hospital in Durban. He was born in the middle of the night to a 17-year-old mother and weighs 3.4kg. The child’s father is 19 years old.
The youngest mother is 15 years old and gave birth in a Port Shepstone hospital. The child’s father is also 15 years old.
There are two 16-year-old mothers as well. One was born in Queen Nandi Hospital, while the other was born at Nkandla Hospital.
Minister Simelane was particularly concerned about the age of mothers who give birth at a young age since their minds and bodies are not prepared to have a child, putting their lives and the lives of their children at risk.
Gifts are given to youngsters by KZN Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube, provincial Health Minister Nomagugu Simelane, and Msunduzi Mayor Mzimkhulu Thobella.
Meanwhile, the Executive Mayor of Mbombela, Cllr Sibongile Makushe-Mazibuko, took time yesterday morning as the city’s first citizen to rejoice and welcome all newborns born on January 1, 2023.
“Congratulations to everyone of you for your bundles of joy, as we begin the new year, we all know that only God gives us children as a blessing,” she remarked as she showered them with gifts.
We have come to greet you and wish you all the best as the City of Mbombela”.
Only one new baby was born in Barberton General Hospital around 02:20 in the year 2023. However, 13 additional babies were born between December 27, 2022 and January 1, 2023.
