»IS claims responsibility for an incident that killed five in Kabul«
KABUL, Afghanistan — Thursday, the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for an explosion that killed at least five people the day before outside the Foreign Ministry in the Afghan capital.
This was the second big attack in Kabul in 2023, and the world community condemned it.
The extremist organization stated in a statement that a “martyrdom-seeker” identified as Kheiber al-Qandahari detonated his explosive vest as ministry personnel and guards exited via the main gate.
The IS claim was met with no immediate comment from Afghanistan’s Taliban leadership. The spokesman for the chief of police in Kabul, Khalid Zadran, stated on Wednesday that five civilians were murdered and “a number of others were wounded” near the ministry.
The IS news channel Aamaq reported that the strike coincided with a training course for diplomats hosted by the ministry.
Since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in 2021, radicals have upped their attacks. Among the targets have been Taliban patrols and the country’s Shiite minority.
More than forty wounded patients were brought to a surgery hospital in Kabul sponsored by the humanitarian organization Emergency NGO following Wednesday’s strike. Director of Emergency in Afghanistan Stefano Sozza predicted at the time that the number of casualties would increase.
The incident was condemned by the United Nations and numerous nations. In a statement issued on Wednesday, Pakistan declared its support for Afghans in their struggle against extremists.
