»Grey College’s 2023 schedule pits them against formidable competition«
Following the release of their schedule for the forthcoming season, it has been announced that Grey College will compete against six top-ten ranked schools in 2023.
Despite sending a squad comprised of U17 and U16 players who will form this year’s XV team, Grey College concluded the year as the top-ranked school team in South Africa and placed second in the World Schools Festival in Thailand.
Additionally, Grey lose the World Schools Festival final.
Grey College has revealed its schedule for the next 2023 season, and it confirms that they will play 17 matches, including contests against Paarl Gym, Paarl Boys High, Affies, Monnas, Oakdale, and Paul Roos, all of which are ranked among the top 10 in the official standings.
In addition, Grey will participate in three rugby festivals: the Graeme College Rugby Day in March, the North-South festival in April, and the Wildeklawer festival from April 29 to May 1.
Their first game of the year will take place on February 25 against an unnamed opponent at the President Steyn Rugby Day, followed by away games against Horskool Duineveld and Welkom Gym.
Grey are slated to face Marlow and St. Andrew’s College in the Graeme Rugby Day competition over the weekend of March 23-25.
Then, the two top school teams in the nation will face off in the national championship. Grey College faces Paarl Gym in Pretoria’s North-South tournament. No 1 vs No 2. It might be a matchup that determines who will be ranked first when the season concludes later this year.
On the second day of the North-South competition, Maritzburg College of Durban will face Grey College. With a ranking outside of the top 20, Maritzburg should be a hurdle that Grey College can easily overcome.
Grey College will take a 12-day break after the North-South competition in Pretoria before going from Bloemfontein to George to face Horskole Outeniqua on 15 April.
Grey College’s third and last festival appearance will consist of two matches at Wildeklawer. Although the tournament schedule has not yet been revealed, it is expected that Grey College will face Horskool Garsfontein during one of their games.
Consequently, Grey’s total number of Top 10 opponents for the year will increase from six to seven.
May will be an exceptionally hectic, congested, and difficult month for Grey College. After playing Wildeklawer on May 1 for the second time, Grey will host Selborne in Bloemfontein on May 6.
The next three matches are against Paarl Boys away in Paarl (May 13), Affies at home in Bloemfontein (20 May), and Monnas in Krugersdorp (27 May).
Grey College will compete against Grey High on July 29 in Port Elizabeth, as the season comes to a close. August will provide exciting matches against Bloemfontein’s Oakdale and Paul Roos, both from Boland.
