On Friday, January 13, a gang of men allegedly assaulted a lieutenant colonel stationed in Knysna. According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the officer incurred severe injuries during the assault.
According to the police complaint, the Lieutenant-Colonel was attacked by a gang of individuals in the Central Business District of Knysna. The police described the assault as unjustified.
A member of the public transported him to the hospital after he incurred severe injuries. Additionally, video footage of the incident is circulating on numerous social media platforms, according to Sergeant Christopher Spies.
Friday afternoon, two suspects aged 21 and 22 were apprehended in connection with the crime. They are charged with attempted murder and assault with intent to cause great bodily damage.
A 57-year-old guy was also arrested for allegedly impeding the work of a police officer. On Monday, January 16, the three suspects are set to appear in court.
The Knysna Community Police Forum (CPF) condemned the assault that occurred at the taxi stand.
Cheryl Britz, chairperson of the Knysna Community Policing Forum, stated, “This is not right, and we are saddened and appropriately dismayed that a well-respected police officer, well-known to the community of Knysna, was assaulted and intentionally injured, and we trust that all those responsible will face the full force of the law.”
The CPF commended the bravery of the citizen who assisted the police officer. Britz stated, “As a community, we must condemn such attacks on our police officers and stand united with them in the fight against crime.”
