Although there was an increase in crime on the subway last year, Mayor Eric Adams has argued that these figures are just a result of more people utilizing it in post-pandemic New York.
In contrast to the city’s overall major crime rate, which increased by 22% in 2022, subway crime increased by 30%.
The city has tried to send out extra NYPD officers to staff stations in response to the high crime rate in the subway. According to Bloomberg, the agency is spending an extra $20 million on police overtime each month this year.
Adams and Chief of Transit Michael Kemper instead decided to compare the 2022 figure with 2019 during their meeting earlier this month.
“Subway crime decreased by 7.7% between 2022 and 2019, reaching its lowest level since 2014. In actuality, 2022 had the lowest total crime in transit rates compared to pre-pandemic years, according to Kemper.
