Saturday afternoon’s DStv Premiership match between Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates resulted in a 1–0 victory for Mamelodi Sundowns as the league leaders took another step toward creating an unassailable lead.
Cassius Mailula scored the game’s sole goal for Masandawana during the first half, and the Buccaneers were unable to mount a comeback after that.
It was Sundowns’ 15th consecutive league victory, with the club preparing to leave the competition for a month to compete in the CAF Champions League. The next PSL match will take place away against Stellenbosch FC on March 4.
In the absence of goalkeeper coach Wendell Robinson, who was suspended after receiving a red card against Sekhukhune United, Kennedy Mweene appeared to assume a management role in the match against Pirates.
Mokwena has finally clarified the reasoning for this.
The Sundowns coach was quoted by iDiski Times as saying, “He’s doubling up into a role we envision for him in the long run.” “Very soon, he’ll be doing his coaching badges; he’s just applied for them, and it’s a normal step in life, you know, when you go from playing to wanting to be engaged in teaching.
“Kennedy has that, he’s been an unbelievable servant for this football club, he’s been incredible in South African football, and he’s had an incredible amount of experience…. He has won the Champions League and the African Cup of Nations, therefore the football club would profit from his coaching. The red card for coach Wendell Robinson may have sped things up a touch, but the cosmos works in extraordinary ways.”
Sundowns will play Richards Bay in the Nedbank Cup on Tuesday, followed by three CAF Champions League matches against Al Hilal of Sudan, CotonSport of Cameroon, and Al Ahly of Egypt.
The DSTV Premiership is led by Sundowns by a significant margin.
