DES MOINES, Iowa — Someone in Washington state defied the odds and won an estimated $747 million Powerball jackpot on Monday night.
The winning numbers were 5, 11, 22, 23, 69, and 7.
Tuesday morning, lottery officials issued a statement indicating that a single ticket matched all six numbers and was valued $754.6 million.
Winners who choose an annuity will get the entire jackpot in one quick but partial payment, followed by subsequent payments over 29 years that increase by 5% per year. The winner may also choose to receive a one-time payment of $407.2 million in cash.
According to Powerball, both potential prizes are pre-tax amounts.
The website for the lottery game indicates that the prize for Thursday’s drawing has decreased to $20 million.
The winning numbers were 5, 11, 22, 23, 69, and 7.
Monday night’s jackpot victory was the first since November 19, 2022. This losing streak enabled the prize to increase in size until it was the ninth-largest in U.S. history.
In comparison to former jackpots, when interest rates were lower, higher interest rates have enabled annuity payments to rise. The majority of winners prefer monetary prizes.
The game’s terrible odds of 1 in 292,2 million are intended to attract more players with large jackpots. A player from Maine won $1.35 billion in January’s Mega Millions, and a person from California won a record $2.04 billion in November’s Powerball. Clearly, this technique has been successful in recent times. These awards have not been claimed by anyone.
Powerball is played in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
