China bans Lockheed Martin and Raytheon for sales to Taiwan

BEIJING — China placed trade and investment sanctions on U.S. defense firms Lockheed Martin and Raytheon on Thursday for supplying arms to Taiwan, intensifying its efforts to isolate the island democracy it claims as part of its territory.

The Ministry of Commerce prohibited the enterprises from importing goods into China or making new investments in the nation.

It was unclear how the penalty would affect Lockheed Martin and Raytheon. The United States prohibits the vast majority of sales of weapons-related technology to China, although certain military contractors also operate in the aerospace and other areas.

In Fujian province on August 4, 2022, Chinese military helicopters fly past Pingtan island, one of mainland China’s closest points to Taiwan.

China and Taiwan separated in 1949 following a civil war. The island has never been a part of the People’s Republic of China, but the Communist Party claims it must merge with the mainland, if necessary by force.

The government of President Xi Jinping has intensified its efforts to frighten Taiwan by flying fighter jets and bombers near the island and launching missiles into the sea.
