Hungerford former councillor gets the ‘shock of his life’ when he received a government letter stating that he was dead

A former town councillor in Hungerford, Berkshire, was shocked to receive a letter from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) stating that he was deceased.

Mark Cusack, 48, claims that the letter left him without a National Insurance number and unable to pay his council tax bill. He was required to obtain a note from his General Practitioner (GP) to prove that he was indeed alive.

Mr Cusack, who lives alone with his dog, Puggles, reported the incident to Action Fraud due to a previous experience with identity theft. Although he found the situation amusing, he emphasized the potential ramifications for someone with a health condition or who is vulnerable.

Mr Cusack’s doctor confirmed his aliveness, writing on Hungerford Surgery-headed notepaper that she had personally consulted with him and that he was alive. The DWP has not yet commented on the matter.
