Mexico’s president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, shared an eerie jungle photo on his Twitter account over the weekend, suggesting it had captured a mythical Mayan elf.
Lopez Obrador is known for cherishing indigenous cultures and beliefs, and he identified the grainy image as an aluxe, a mischievous critter that exists only in ancient Mayan folklore.
He claimed that the photo was taken by one of the Mexican engineers working in the jungles of the Yucatan peninsula to survey a train line for tourists, which is one of his pet projects.
In his tweet, the president wrote, “I share two photos of our supervision of the Mayan Train works.
One, taken by an engineer three days ago, apparently from an aluxe.
Another, by Diego Prieto, of a splendid pre-Hispanic sculpture in Ek Balam. Everything is mystical.”
The second image showed an ancient carving of the troublesome little devil. It’s unclear if Lopez Obrador made the comment tongue-in-cheek.
Mexico has a rich and fascinating cultural heritage, and the president’s interest in indigenous cultures and beliefs is an important aspect of his leadership.
While some may dismiss the photo as a hoax or a joke, the president’s fascination with Mayan folklore and his support for local communities and their traditions should be applauded.
As Mexico seeks to promote tourism and economic development, it’s essential that its leaders recognize and respect the country’s diverse cultural heritage.
