On Monday, the Mets’ spring training saw Tim Locastro provide backup outfield options by going 2-for-3 with a stolen base in their 12-7 loss to the Cardinals in Jupiter, Fla. Locastro, who played for the Yankees in parts of the last two seasons, showcased his speed and talent in the game.
However, not all went well for the Mets as right-hander Jose Chacin had a rough debut. He retired just one batter and allowed five earned runs in the fifth inning, leaving him with a spring training ERA of 135.00. Chacin allowed three hits and two walks, showing that he has a long way to go.
On a positive note, David Peterson caught the eye of many as he fielded Paul Goldschmidt’s squib near the third-base line and made an athletic jump throw to first base in time to nail Goldschmidt for the out.
Looking ahead, the Mets’ Grapefruit League debut against the Astros at Clover Park will see Jose Quintana taking the mound on Tuesday. Mets fans will eagerly anticipate their new pitcher’s debut, hoping he can help the team succeed in the upcoming season.
