Qantas CEO Alan Joyce has announced that he will step down from his position by the end of 2023, sparking speculation about who will replace him. Three executives are currently being considered for the role, including Cameron Wallace, who was recently appointed as the CEO of Qantas International and Freight. Wallace, who has had a two-decade career in the aviation industry in the Asia Pacific region, will begin his new role on July 1. The other two contenders are Qantas Loyalty Chief Olivia Worth and CFO Vanessa Hudson. Joyce plans to stay on until at least the end of this year.
Qantas Chairman Richard Goyder has previously stated that Joyce would serve as CEO “until at least the end of 2023.” Andrew David, the current CEO of Qantas Domestic and International, will resign in September, with the job title split in two. Wallace’s appointment has been well received, with Joyce describing him as “one of the best airline executives in the region.”
Hudson, who has been with the airline for 28 years and has been CFO since October 2019, has also expressed interest in the top job, saying that she would be “incredibly honoured and proud” to do it. Worth, who has been with the airline for 13 years and oversees the Frequent Flyer program, is also considered a strong candidate.
Qantas recently posted an interim underlying pre-tax profit of $1.43 billion, its first return to profitability since the Covid pandemic began three years ago. The airline’s success has been attributed to cost-cutting measures, a rebound in domestic travel, and the easing of international border restrictions.
