House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) criticized Attorney General Merrick Garland on Tuesday for his reluctance to appoint a special counsel in the criminal investigation of Hunter Biden, the first son of President Biden. Jordan wrote a letter to Garland stating that the Department of Justice’s investigation into Hunter Biden has the “appearance of a conflict of interest” and meets the requirements for a special counsel. Despite appointing special counsels for other investigations, Garland has not appointed one in this matter, which Jordan believes is conspicuous.
Jordan requested that Garland provide the Judiciary Committee with documents from the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Delaware regarding the status of a special counsel and communications between employees of US attorney’s offices who could bring charges against Hunter Biden. He demanded that the information be given to the panel no later than March 14 at 5 p.m. as part of the House Judiciary Committee’s oversight of the DOJ.
The DOJ has so far resisted cooperating with the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee, and Jordan has accused the DOJ of being “scared to cooperate” with the panel’s investigations. Jordan’s request for a special counsel in the Hunter Biden case coincides with the House Oversight Committee’s broad inquiry into the business dealings of the Biden family, including the first son.
Last week, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) accused the Biden Treasury Department of “operating in bad faith” by preventing his committee from accessing over 150 bank reports related to Hunter Biden’s transactions. Comer says that the Treasury has made “several excuses” not to comply with his Jan. 11 request for “Suspicious Activity Reports” triggered by Hunter, his brother James Biden, their associates, and related companies.
Garland is scheduled to appear before the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday, where he will face questioning from Comer and other Republicans on the panel. According to reports, federal agents investigating Hunter Biden believe they have enough evidence to charge him with tax crimes and for lying about his drug abuse on paperwork for a firearms purchase.
