Kate Middleton wore a significant accessory during a recent outing with Prince William at a St. David’s Day military parade at the Combermere Barracks in Windsor. The 41-year-old Princess of Wales donned a replica of the Welsh Guards Leek Brooch, which was designed in 1960 as a regimental gift for the late Queen Elizabeth II, funded by the guardsmen.
The Queen wore her leek brooch to nearly all her engagements with the Welsh guards, as they are a national symbol of the country. Replicas of the sparkling brooch are now owned by many members of the royal family.
Princess Diana wore a replica to a parade of the First Battalion of Welsh Guards in London in 1990, and Queen Corsort Camilla sported hers during her first visit to Wales after the Queen’s death in September 2022. Middleton pinned her replica brooch to the lapel of one of her favourite coats, a custom Alexander McQueen double-breasted number with black buttons, next to an actual leek to match the soldiers, who wear the vegetable in memory of St. David’s guidance in a battle against the Saxons. Further committing to the theme, the Waleses handed out the allium to officers of the Welsh Guard.
Middleton paired the look with Gianvito Rossi boots and delicate black embroidered gloves. She previously wore the same ensemble to Prince William’s Sandhurst graduation in 2006, although she opted for a large hat at the time instead of her small black fascinator.
The royal couple’s schedule has been packed this week. They recently competed in a spin class race, with Middleton winning despite wearing a skirt and heels. She may celebrate her victory with some homemade leek soup.
