On 2 March 2023, the Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) released a joint statement following their call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The statement reaffirmed the G7’s unwavering support for Ukraine, which has been under attack by Russia for the past year.
The G7 condemned Russia’s illegal, unjustifiable, and unprovoked war, and called for Russia to immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw its troops from the internationally recognized territory of Ukraine.
The G7 leaders expressed their commitment to intensifying diplomatic, financial, and military support for Ukraine, and to increasing the costs to Russia and those supporting its war effort.
They also committed to countering the negative impacts of the war on the rest of the world, particularly on the most vulnerable people.
The G7 reiterated their condemnation of Russia’s attempted illegal annexation of Ukraine’s Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions, and their commitment to never recognizing these illegal annexation attempts.
The statement highlighted the importance of preventing Russia from finding new ways to acquire advanced materials, technology, and military and industrial equipment from G7 jurisdictions that it can use to develop its industrial sectors and further its violations of international law.
The G7 also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening coordinated sanctions and other economic measures against Russia to counter its capacity to wage its illegal aggression.
The leaders called for an international mechanism to register the damages Russia has inflicted and for Russia to pay for Ukraine’s long-term reconstruction.
In addition to their commitment to Ukraine, the G7 expressed their sympathy for all those affected by the earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria and pledged continued support for tackling the consequences of the catastrophe.
They also emphasized the importance of providing humanitarian aid to vulnerable countries in need of assistance and stressed the importance of food security and the availability and sustainable use of fertilizers. The G7 pledged to uphold the international order based on the rule of law and reiterated their solidarity with Ukraine and support for countries and people in need.
