The Padres have made another stunning move in baseball by signing Manny Machado to an $350 million, 11-year deal.
This does not seem to be the end of their spending, as they are now reportedly in talks for deals with Juan Soto and Josh Hader, two of the best players in the game.
After the Machado deal, Xander Bogaerts joked with Soto that they would need a bigger truck for his payday, given his age and talent.
Despite being in a mid-sized market with geographic challenges, the Padres are making waves with their spending.
They are expected to reach out to Soto and Hader soon, even though Soto is not a free agent until after 2024 and is represented by Scott Boras, who is known for not passing up chances for free agency with great players.
Boras called Soto a “generational” player, stressing the value of his age and the nine more prime years he has before turning 32.
Soto and Hader both expressed interest in listening to offers from the Padres, but also made it clear that they want to try free agency at some point in their careers.
The Padres are determined to put together a team of players in the prime of their careers, and they are willing to spend big to make it happen.
However, it remains to be seen whether they will be successful in their pursuit of Soto and Hader, given the competitive landscape of Major League Baseball.
