A contestant on Wheel of Fortune, Angie Gautney, has become the subject of viral memes and jokes after failing to solve a simple puzzle in the Food & Drink category. During the March 1 episode, Gautney attempted to solve the puzzle, which read: “WARM TOASTED BA_ELS WITH LO_ AND CREAM CHEESE”.
She guessed “WARM TOASTED BAGELS WITH LOW AND CREAM CHEESE,” which was incorrect. The next contestant correctly guessed “WARM TOASTED BAGELS WITH LOX AND CREAM CHEESE”.
Bagels with cream cheese and lox are a popular breakfast food in the US, brought over from Eastern Europe by Jewish immigrants over 100 years ago. Gautney, a teacher at Stetson Baptist Christian School in Florida, won $7,300 in prize money despite the embarrassing moment. She announced her appearance on the show in a Facebook post.
Twitter users did not let Gautney off lightly, however. Some tweeted jokes about the answer, while others expressed sympathy. In March 2022, Wheel of Fortune host Pat Sajak took to Twitter to defend contestants who are mocked for failing to solve simple puzzles.
He said that contestants are under a lot of pressure and are “good people in a bad situation”.
