Over the weekend, a woman in Texas was arrested for allegedly attempting to sell a rental car for $10,000. The Humble Police Department shared the incident on Facebook, noting that a citizen had flagged down an officer, saying he was trying to purchase a car he found online, but believed it to be stolen.
The car was a 2022 Toyota Camry, and the seller, who police did not name, was attempting to sell the nearly brand-new car for about half of its value.
According to the police report, the seller agreed to meet with the buyer later to complete the transaction and take a picture of their Texas driver’s license and the vehicle’s title. However, the buyer thought the license looked off and alerted the police. Upon running the information from the license, police discovered that nothing matched up.
Officers used the VIN from the fake vehicle title and contacted the owner of the Camry, who confirmed that it was a rental and was not for sale. Collaborating with the police, the buyer agreed to meet with the seller after settling on a price of $10,000. When the two met, the woman was arrested and charged with third-degree auto theft and second-degree tampering, both felonies.
The Humble Police Department has not responded to questions about the incident.
