Taylor had previously received a written warning for emphasising the word “cock” when pronouncing a female student’s surname.
Later, during an all-female English GCSE resit class, girls as young as 17 complained that Taylor had behaved inappropriately towards them.
One girl specifically claimed to have seen Taylor looking at another student’s breasts and bottom. Taylor blamed his contact lenses and his diabetes for his behaviour.
Taylor sued the college for disability discrimination, but the employment tribunal ruled that his behaviour was not connected to his disability.
Other claims of breach of contract, failure to make reasonable adjustments and unfair dismissal succeeded.
The Education Workforce Council imposed a two-year reprimand on Taylor but allowed him to continue working in education.
The hearing found five allegations of misconduct proven, including his repeated emphasis on the sexual innuendo in a student’s surname.
The committee described his behaviour as infantile and unprofessional, which made the 16-year-old student feel humiliated and uncomfortable.
The hearing concluded that Taylor’s conduct was foolish, unprofessional, and ill-judged, but not fundamentally incompatible with him remaining in education.
Taylor accepted that he had made mistakes in his interactions with students and that his behaviour had been inappropriate. He had worked for the college for 23 years and claimed unfair dismissal after his sacking.
