Woman left with critical injuries after a minor surgery in a Perth hospital

A woman was critically injured during a routine gynaecological surgery at St John of God Hospital in Perth. The incident occurred in an operating theatre at the hospital’s Mt Lawley campus on Friday.

An artery was accidentally severed during the surgery, causing significant blood loss that required an emergency transfusion. The woman was taken to Royal Perth Hospital in a critical condition and is now in intensive care.

There are concerns that the incident could result in brain damage. This is the second bungle to occur at the hospital in three weeks.

St John of God Hospital CEO Vanessa Unwin confirmed the clinical incident in a statement, saying that it resulted in an adverse outcome for the patient.

She added that patient safety is the hospital’s highest priority and that they treat incidents with the utmost seriousness. The hospital has been in contact with the patient’s family.

Last month, a man in his 60s suffered serious burns at the Subiaco campus during a routine surgery gone wrong. The patient was being treated for a skin condition when a fire broke out in the operating room, and his oxygen tube caught fire.

The man was transferred to Fiona Stanley Hospital with critical burns. The hospital released a similar statement regarding the incident when the patient’s injuries were discovered.

The WA Health Department spokesperson acknowledged that patient safety is of paramount importance and that it is a distressing time for the patient and their family.

The spokesperson added that the department is committed to improving patient safety by reviewing reported incidents and developing clinical strategies to prevent these incidents from occurring in the future.

Hospitals have seven working days to report incidents to the department.
