Two individuals, including a 16-year-old boy, were hit by bullets in East Harlem on Tuesday afternoon in what authorities believe to be gang-related gun violence connected to an earlier student shooting on the West Side.
The teenager and four other Harlem Renaissance High School students were heading out for lunch when they encountered three men, leading to a fight between the two groups.
During the altercation, bullets were fired, injuring the teen and a 27-year-old bystander, both of whom were shot in the leg and taken to Harlem Hospital.
Police sources suggest the incident may be a retaliatory response to an earlier shooting that put two Upper West Side high schools on lockdown.
A 17-year-old student was shot multiple times during a fight with other teenagers, with a 19-year-old suspect later arrested. This event prompted nearby schools to enter lockdown.
The injured student was taken to the hospital, underwent surgery, and is in stable condition. Authorities believe that the two incidents, along with a third shooting, are all connected.
NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell stated at a news conference that they are proceeding as if all the events are related.
