Pantsuit Nation, a Facebook-born feminist voting group that gained notoriety during the 2016 US presidential election for urging supporters of Hillary Clinton to wear pantsuits to the polls, has announced its sudden disbandment, leaving its 2.8 million members surprised.
The founder, Libby Chamberlain, wrote a post informing the members that the organization that currently manages the group had decided to shut it down within the next two days.
A supermajority, a feminist political organization, had taken over Pantsuit Nation in 2019, but its membership had dwindled from a peak of 4 million followers to 2.8 million.
Supermajority stated that it is dropping the Facebook page to focus on other avenues to increase female voter turnout.
However, the exact reason for abandoning the page is unknown, and even the moderators were left in the dark until the announcement was made.
Many members found a sense of community within the group over the years and were pleading for Chamberlain to pass the reins so that the group could continue.
Supermajority promised users that it would preserve the seven-year-old group but would be pausing new posts, comments, and reactions on the page starting March 18.
However, the organization allegedly already made moves to silence its outraged audience, deleting posts speaking out against the decision and refusing to approve more than 400 member-made posts to the feed.
Members complained that Supermajority was ignoring their pleas and turned to the organization’s main Facebook page to express their disappointment.
Supermajority, Chamberlain, and several group moderators did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
