Blake Johnson, a former professional surfer from Australia, has broken the Guinness World Record for the longest surf by catching 525 waves during a 30-hour marathon in the water.
Johnson, who is 40 years old, set this challenge for himself to raise money and awareness for mental health charities.
He successfully completed the challenge, and emerged from the surf at Cronulla Beach in Sydney at 7:11am on Friday morning, after continuing through the night.
Hundreds of supporters and locals gathered at the beach to witness Johnson’s remarkable achievement.
When asked how he felt after spending more than 30 hours in the water, an exhausted but happy Johnson replied, “Pretty cooked.” The dangers involved in this record-breaking surf included dehydration, sleep deprivation, hallucinations, and sharks.
Johnson’s effort has so far raised over $230,000 through his World’s Longest Surf site, which will be given to the Chumpy Pullin Foundation, named after the Olympic snowboarder, as well as several youth mental health organizations. He is continuing to surf for another 10 hours on Friday, to reach the 40-hour mark.
Johnson explained that he was completing the surf in honor of his father and three friends who sadly lost their mental health battles.
He pushes himself to the limits with his adventures to prove to himself that he is worthy and can get through hard times, and that is when his lessons are learned.
“Everyone deserves to feel awesome, everyone should take care of themselves,” he said before heading back into the waves.
