The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed three officers from the Special Protection Unit (SPU) Base 1 in Kano for unprofessional conduct, including the misuse of firearms.
The dismissal came as a result of complaints and findings on a video that went viral on April 7, 2023.
The officers, identified as Inspr. Dahiru Shuaibu, Sgt. Abdullahi Badamasi, and Sgt. Isah Danladi, were accused of high-handedness, unprofessional conduct, and misuse of firearms.
The dismissal was a result of an orderly room trial conducted by the Force Provost Marshal.
The officers were found guilty of discreditable conduct, misuse of firearms, abuse of power, gross indiscipline, and wastage of live ammunition.
The officers were reportedly attached to a musician in Kano on escort duties when they repeatedly fired shots from their official firearms into the air at Kahutu Village, Katsina State, in spite of police policy against firing in the air.
The officers’ actions disregarded the possible risk to the crowd at the location, including children.
Force Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi stated that the act was not only criminal and unprofessional but also embarrassing to the Force and the nation as a whole.
The dismissal of the three officers serves as a warning to other officers to carry out their duties in line with extant laws to avoid sanctions.
The Nigeria Police Force’s decision to dismiss the officers is a necessary step to ensure accountability and professionalism among its officers.
The officers’ actions were not only unprofessional but also posed a danger to the public.
The NPF’s warning to other officers to abide by extant laws is a reminder that officers have a duty to protect the public and uphold the law.
It is hoped that the dismissal of these officers will serve as a deterrent to others who may be tempted to engage in similar misconduct.
