Ex-boxer Zab Judah believes that a three-month sex ban before a fight made him punch harder, contradicting sceptics within the sport who see it as an urban legend rather than a scientific way to increase the power and ferocity in a punch.
The so-called “nookie ban” is a regular debate in boxing, with fighters, trainers and other experts discussing its potential effect on boxers’ performances.
Former WBC super-middleweight champion Carl Froch has also previously said he abstained from sex before fights, while Chris Eubank Jr has commented on his period of celibacy before a bout.
Judah fought Amir Khan and Floyd Mayweather Jr over the course of his career and stated that he was sure that banning sex three months before a fight increased his punching power.
Froch compared boxers to racehorses that are not allowed to mate in the build-up to a racing season.
The retired fighter said, “Women weaken the legs.
But for me, it’s not a sacrifice – and I say that bearing in mind Rachel was Miss Maxim a couple of years ago.
She’s a model and a beautiful girl.
But boxing is too important.
My life’s on the line.”
Judah claimed that he advised every fighter to refrain from sex before a fight, and he told OLBG, “I know they say it’s a myth, but yes, I’m telling you straight up, it’s real.
You punch harder if you don’t have sex before a fight.”
However, many within the sport are more sceptical, and some believe that a period of celibacy before a fight is an urban legend rather than an objective way to increase the power and ferocity in a punch.
