The Lagos State Police Command has provided an explanation for the recent invasion of the residence of Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti in the Ikeja area of the state.
Earlier this week, police officers conducted a search of Kuti’s home in search of evidence related to alleged criminal activities.
During the search, they thoroughly combed the rooms and reportedly confiscated Kuti’s wife’s mobile phone.
Police Defend Their Actions
In response to the criticisms that arose following the house search, Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Command, addressed the situation.
He stated that the police had conducted the search based on the alleged discovery of suspicious items that required further investigation and proof beyond a reasonable doubt.
To carry out the search, the police obtained a search warrant from the court, which they duly executed.
The investigation into the matter is still ongoing.
Police Authority’s Explanation
Hundeyin further explained through a series of tweets that the police are not restricted to only investigating the initial crime.
He emphasized that police departments worldwide often come across other crimes while investigating an initial offense.
As a result, they have a duty to investigate these additional crimes in line with their mandate of detecting and investigating criminal activities.
Continuation of the Investigation
The police spokesperson concluded by stating that the investigation will continue.
The search warrant was obtained to examine the suspicious findings, and the police will follow proper procedures to establish the facts surrounding the case.
They remain committed to their responsibility of uncovering and investigating crimes.
