Hollywood seems to have developed a fondness for Welsh sports in recent times.
Wrexham AFC, the football club that was taken over by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, has become a favorite among movie stars, earning global recognition.
Another Welsh athlete who has garnered admiration from the glitterati of Hollywood is cyclist Geraint Thomas.
Thomas currently holds a slim two-second lead after stage 12 of the Giro d’Italia.
The riders will be venturing into the Alps for the first time this year during Friday’s stage.
As Thomas competes, he can expect immense support from fans back home and also enjoys the backing of a few celebrities, including actor Ben Stiller.
Ben Stiller, known for his roles in comedy films, recently took to social media to express his apparent support for Thomas.
He quoted Thomas’ tweet, which referred to the eye-catching ‘maglia rosa’ (pink jersey) worn by the race’s leader, and conveyed his admiration.
Thomas had written, “Wouldn’t have minded a spot of sun but felt very special to wear the maglia rosa today. Thanks to everyone for their messages over the last couple of days.”
Stiller responded with enthusiasm, simply stating, “Very exciting.”
The actor further showcased his appreciation for Thomas by congratulating him on a “dad joke” that was shared the following day.
The joke went like this: “Did you hear about the Italian chef with a terminal illness? He pastaway.
Cannoli do so much.
Now he’s just a pizza history.”
Impressed by Thomas’ humor, Stiller commended him by saying, “Not afraid to do edgy material.
All the more reason to be a fan.”
Such high praise from the actor adds to the growing support for the Welsh cyclist.
It’s evident that Welsh sports, particularly Wrexham AFC and Geraint Thomas’ cycling endeavors, have captivated the attention and admiration of Hollywood’s elite.
The influx of celebrity backing serves as a testament to the growing global recognition and appeal of Welsh sporting achievements.
