Whoopi Goldberg has refuted rumors that she wore a fat suit for the upcoming Emmett Till film and asked individuals not to judge others based on their appearance.
In the film, the 66-year-old actress portrays Alma Carthan, mother to Mamie and grandma to Emmett.
According to mirror.co.uk, the film centers on the true story of Mamie Till Mobley’s search of justice for her 14-year-old son Emmett.
In 1955, while visiting his cousins in Mississippi, Emmett was lynched.
In her review of the picture, published on Friday by The Daily Beast, Kyndall Cunningham stated that the celebrated actress donned a “distracting fat suit.”
Goldberg confronted the author and stated that she “truly doesn’t care” about the review.
“In her review, a woman who writes for one of the periodicals was distracted by my fat costume.
During Monday’s episode of “The View,” she stated, “I don’t really care how you feel about the movie, but you should know it wasn’t a fat suit, that was me.”
The actress said, “I’m assuming you don’t watch the show, else you’d know that wasn’t a fat suit.”
She stated that it was “alright to dislike the picture” but that people shouldn’t be judged based on their appearance when their film is criticized.
“Just comment on the acting, and if you have a question, ask someone,” the “Sister Act” star advised. I am certain you did not want to be disrespectful.”
Sunny Hostin, a fellow panelist, was stunned by the fat suit remark and noted that Whoopi has been honest about the “health issues” she has faced.
The actress said, “We will hope that she was simply unaware, and now she will know that the next time she discusses someone, she should refer to them as an actor.
“Don’t make general claims if you’re unsure if that’s them in there; doing so undermines your credibility as a knowledgeable individual.”
The Daily Beast review has been updated to include the following editor’s note: “This story has been amended to include Whoopi Goldberg’s denial that she was wearing a fat suit.”
