President Ramaphosa to speak at the WSF inaugural session in Cape Town on Tuesday

President Cyril Ramaphosa will speak at the inaugural session of the World Science Forum (WSF) in Cape Town on Tuesday afternoon.

A highlight of South Africa’s inaugural hosting of this global event under the aegis of the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) will be the President’s participation in the World Science Forum (WSF).

The World Scientific Festival is held every two years and is one of the most important science events in the globe, bringing together experts from all over the world to debate the role of science in society.

South Africa’s hosting of the event generates enormous economic activity in Cape Town, as well as in sectors around the nation that support such an event.

“In hosting this forum, South Africa is looking to promote a global debate that inspires action; provides support for African leadership in global science policy discussions and promotes South Africa as a strategic partner for global science collaboration in response to societal challenges,” the DSI said.

Science for Human Dignity; Science for Climate Justice; Science Diplomacy for Multilateralism; and Science for Africa and the World are some of the topics that will be discussed at the conference, which was organised by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

More than 900 prominent scientists, decision-makers from governments and business, members of civil society, and the media will share their perspectives on the emerging problems confronting science in the twenty-first century.

In addition, a number of pre-events have been organised, including a Science Journalism Programme, discussions about the green hydrogen economy, an air-quality fun run in Sea Point and Khayelitsha, excursions to scientific facilities in Cape Town, a robotics boot camp for learners, a Women in Science film festival, and a breakfast function with the international Square Kilometre Array Organisation.

The theme for the forum, which will be held from 6 to 9 December 2022 in the Cape Town International Convention Centre, will be “Science for Social Justice.”
