Presidential Election Petition Tribunal Rejects Application for Live Broadcast of Proceedings

The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal has revealed the reasons behind its dismissal of an application filed by the Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

The application sought the court’s permission to broadcast the court proceedings live in their case against the victory of President-elect Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the February 25th election.

Justice Haruna Tsammani, presiding over the tribunal, declared on Monday, May 22, that the application lacked merit and was consequently dismissed.

The judge further explained that live streaming of court proceedings requires careful planning and budgeting, and it cannot be implemented abruptly.

Justice Tsammani emphasized that such an application cannot be granted without the existence of specific rules that enable its implementation.

The Presidential Election Petition (PEP) court cannot allow live telecast without the necessary framework or policies in place.

The court’s decision to dismiss the application was unanimous among the five members of the panel.
