Supporters Rally for Seun Kuti’s Release
Supporters of Nigerian musician Seun Kuti gathered at the magistrate’s court in Yaba, Lagos State to protest and demand the release of the popular artist.
The protest occurred due to the adjournment of his trial, allegedly caused by the absence of the judge, according to an anonymous source cited by PUNCH.
Trial Adjourned to May 24, 2023
Justice Adeola Olatubosun of the Chief Magistrates Court in Yaba, Lagos State, has reportedly adjourned the trial of Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti to Wednesday, May 24, 2023.
The court proceedings were delayed, leading to disappointment among the supporters who had hoped for a resolution.
Protesters Call for Action
Concerned about Seun Kuti’s continued detention, protesters at the court held up placards with messages such as “End police brutality” and “Free Seun Kuti.”
Their actions aimed to draw attention to his case and advocate for his release.
Yeni Kuti Unaware of Adjournment
Yeni Kuti, Seun’s elder sister, expressed her lack of knowledge regarding the trial’s adjournment when approached for comments by the newspaper.
She mentioned that Seun’s wife had not reached out to her with any updates about the situation, indicating a lack of information regarding the court’s decision.
Background of the Case
Seun Kuti made headlines after allegedly slapping a police officer on the Third Mainland Bridge on May 13.
Following the incident, he voluntarily surrendered himself to the authorities on May 15, responding to the arrest order issued by Inspector General of Police Usman Baba.
He was subsequently arraigned at the Magistrates’ Court in Yaba, Lagos and remanded to allow the police to complete their investigation.
The developments surrounding Seun Kuti’s trial have sparked public interest and raised concerns regarding police brutality and the handling of the case.
The adjournment of the trial has fueled further calls for justice and transparency in the legal proceedings.
