Civil Society Condemns Alleged Corrupt Appointments by President Bola Tinubu

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), in collaboration with Transparency International (TI) Nigeria, has voiced strong condemnation against President Bola Tinubu for purportedly appointing individuals with corrupt backgrounds into critical roles within the government.

Expressing Concerns and Outlining Allegations

Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, the Executive Director of CISLAC, expressed deep concern over the situation, stating that appointing individuals facing substantial corruption allegations to lead the ruling political party is alarming.

The fact that these appointments are happening while ongoing investigations by anti-graft agencies are taking place at both state and federal levels against some of these individuals adds to the gravity of the issue.

Appalling Ministerial Screening List

Rafsanjani revealed that some of the names sent by the president for ministerial positions have unresolved corruption-related cases pending with anti-graft agencies.

This raises questions about the government’s commitment to upholding integrity in governance and its response to public concerns, especially regarding the fight against corruption.

Backtracking on Anti-Corruption Progress

The recent appointments and nominations, as highlighted by Rafsanjani, indicate a possible regression in Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts since 1999.

The appointment of an ex-governor who is internationally accused of assisting a former military ruler in laundering Nigeria’s wealth abroad stands as one such example.

These actions risk tarnishing the country’s international reputation and may raise concerns about money laundering, drug trafficking, and other illicit activities.

Emphasizing Transparency and Responsible Leadership

In the face of these allegations and concerns, Rafsanjani stressed the urgent need for transparency and responsible leadership in public offices.

The lack of accountability in the appointments and the potential consequences on Nigeria’s reputation demand immediate action to ensure that those holding public office are held to the highest standards of integrity and ethics.

The Call for Positive Lessons and Institutionalized Accountability

Rafsanjani expressed sadness over the potential lack of positive lessons for young Nigerians to learn from these leaders entangled in corruption.

He urged citizens and well-meaning Nigerians to continue demanding the institutionalization of transparency, accountability, and responsible leadership in all aspects of public service.

As CISLAC and TI Nigeria voice their concerns and advocate for responsible governance, the spotlight is on the government’s response and actions towards ensuring an accountable and corruption-free administration.

Transparency and accountability are vital pillars in building a prosperous and reputable nation.
