Fostering Sports Enthusiasm Beyond 2027
The Deputy Governor expounded on the State’s ambitions, extending far beyond the immediate hosting responsibilities.
He detailed the state’s ambitious plans to cultivate the passion for football among the younger generation.
This vision is manifesting in a multi-pronged approach, including substantial renovations to the Teslim Balogun Stadium, aiming to elevate it beyond its current standards, ensuring it’s well-suited for the Africa Cup of Nations and subsequent events.
Furthermore, the State is embarking on the construction of novel stadiums across various communities, such as Agege, Ifako-Ijaye, Ikorodu, and Epe, with the intention of engaging and encouraging youth participation in both male and female football, alongside other sports.
Inspection and Expectations
Mallam Mainasara Illo, the leader of the Nigerian delegation for the Africa Cup of Nations 2027 Bid, elucidated the purpose of the Inspection Team’s visit to Lagos.
Their objective revolved around evaluating the football facilities that the Nigeria Football Federation had nominated for hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
The selection entailed six states in Nigeria and two cities in the Republic of Benin.
Mallam Illo stressed the significance of Lagos State’s role, considering it’s the largest economy in Africa, the most populous state in Nigeria, and a stronghold of football fervor.
Encouraging Progress and Expectations
Mallam Illo urged expedited progress at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, acknowledging the ongoing construction efforts observed during their visit.
He also made a request for the provision of high-quality healthcare facilities and accommodations, particularly catering to Very Important Personalities (VIPs), thereby addressing an essential aspect of successful event hosting.
