A British Octogenarian’s Extraordinary Space Journey
Jon Goodwin, an 80-year-old former Olympian from the UK, has described the utterly surreal sensation of being aboard Virgin Galactic’s inaugural space tourism flight.
Accompanied by Keisha Schahaff, 46, and her daughter Anastatia Mayers, 18, who is pursuing physics studies in Aberdeen, Goodwin spent 90 minutes aboard the VSS Unity for this historic voyage.
Virgin Galactic announced the safe return of the flight at 4:39 pm UK time, marking Goodwin as only the second individual with Parkinson’s disease to venture into space.
Goodwin, who competed in the 1972 Olympics as a canoeist, expressed, “It was far more dramatic than I imagined it would be.”
He emphasized the astonishing acceleration, reaching Mach 3 in just eight-and-a-half seconds, which felt incredibly surreal.
The re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere was equally intense, leaving him feeling as though it might have been out of control had he not known otherwise.
The most remarkable moment, he said, was observing Earth from space, marveling at the clarity and emotional impact.
He declared it to be the most exhilarating day of his life.
A Life-Altering Experience with a Hopeful Message
Goodwin shared that the flight had surpassed even his wildest dreams and expressed his wish that it might inspire others with Parkinson’s to embrace extraordinary endeavors.
Keisha Schahaff and her daughter, chosen through a prize draw, became the first mother-daughter duo to journey to space.
In contrast, Goodwin secured his seat 18 years ago by purchasing a ticket worth £194,500 ($250,000).
The launch and safe return from New Mexico not only signify a significant achievement but also a test of space tourism’s feasibility.
The VSS Unity detached from the mothership VMS Eve, propelling passengers into sub-orbital space, offering them the sensation of weightlessness while gazing back at Earth.
