Anna Sorokin, a German citizen notorious for executing an elaborate ruse in which she posed as a wealthy heiress, will be released from Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody on Friday evening, according to a representative for the agency.
Sorokin has been detained by ICE since 25 March 2021. A judge ruled that Sorokin, who had overstayed her visa, would be imprisoned until her deportation.
A spokesperson for ICE stated in a statement provided to Insider on Friday, “On Tuesday, an immigration judge with the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) issued an order granting Anna Sorokin conditional release from ICE custody upon posting a bond and agreeing to the terms of her conditional release.”
It is unknown what the conditions of her conditional release were, and additional information is unavailable at this time.
Prior to her imprisonment by ICE, Sorokin was convicted in 2019 of an elaborate conspiracy in which she defrauded members of New York City’s elite between 2013 and 2017 by posing as the affluent German heiress Anna Delvey.
Sorokin was convicted of, among other crimes, grand theft. She was released in February 2021 after serving approximately two years in jail and was apprehended by ICE around six weeks later.
The exploits of Sorokin, made famous by a 2018 New York Magazine article, were dramatized this year in the Netflix series “Inventing Anna.” Sorokin wrote an essay for Insider in February from ICE detention on her experience behind bars and her thoughts on the series.
