A Ukrainian refugee who escaped the April carnage in Bucharest has given birth in the United Kingdom.
37-year-old Lena Kulakovska escaped in June when 36 weeks pregnant.
Last month, Nicole was born at a hospital in Plymouth.
The mother said, “I did not want to go.”
I remained in Ukraine until June in the hope that the violence would cease. However, I did not want to give birth in a basement, so I chose to go.
Her spouse Sergei, 39, was unable to accompany her because males between the ages of 18 and 60 are prohibited from leaving Ukraine in case they are required for military service.
However, she was allowed to bring her children, Kyryl, seven, and Arina, five, to the United Kingdom.
They are staying with Nick Shutt, the archdeacon of Plymouth, and his wife, Corinne.
During a month-long siege that entailed intense bombardment, the Russians slaughtered hundreds of residents in the city of Bucha during which they occupied the city with heavy artillery fire.
The tiny infant celebrates her birthday with her sister Arina on July 5.
