When asked about the event that led to her transition to her iconic pantsuits in the late 1990s, Hillary Clinton confessed that a photographer had taken an image of her up-the-skirt and used it in advertising.
The former secretary of state said that she had probably not worn a skirt “since 1999” in the third episode of “Gutsy,” the Apple TV+ series she co-hosts with her daughter Chelsea.
Clinton said that she was wearing a “first lady skirt suit” when she and her husband Bill Clinton visited Brazil in 1995, while he was president of the nation.
We had a lovely talk before the press entered with what is known as a press spray and all these cameras, according to Clinton.
So, when the meeting and the visit are over, I return to the White House to find that someone has taken a photo up my skirt and is using it for billboards in Rio advertising a certain brand of underwear.
The commercial in question, which featured Clinton reclining and what seemed to be her underpants, was for the lingerie brand Duloren, the Associated Press reported in 1995.
The caption on the picture, which was in Portuguese, said, “Mr. President of the United States of America: Your Excellency couldn’t comprehend what Duloren can achieve,” according to the Associated Press. Eventually, the advertising was taken down.
Since then, Clinton’s signature outfit has been the pantsuit, which has become a symbol of her distinctive style.
As previously reported by Insider, when Clinton posed for her official first lady picture, which was released in 2004, she became the first spouse of a president to do so. She also made jokes about pantsuits when running for office in 2016.
Although the advertising wasn’t entirely revealing, the previous Democratic candidate argued it was nevertheless “suggestive.”
That did influence how I thought, she said. “I therefore decided against running for office since I don’t need it. Don your uniform, don your uniform.”
